National Travel and Tourism Week is officially underway and new Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Lelan Dains says it comes at a perfect time with travel and tourism beginning to rebound after taking a major hit over the past year.

The theme for this year's National Travel and Tourism Week is "the Power of Travel." Dains says he loves the message the theme sends especially considering the impacts the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the travel industry over the past year.

In Emporia alone, hotel stays were down 35 percent between 2019 and 2020 due to the cancellation of numerous events and the lack of visitors to Emporia due to travel restrictions. Thankfully, Dains says those numbers are starting to rebound according to projections this spring.

Dains says the recent Dynamic Discs Open which concluded Saturday provided a major boost to the community and he expects the upcoming Unbound Gravel Bike Race will do the same. Dains says having more people come to the community provides a major financial boost to the community thanks to the collection of transient guest tax dollars.

The collections from the tax fund benefits a number of activities throughout the calendar year in Emporia thus further increasing tourism within the city.

National Travel and Tourism Week will continue through Saturday. For more information visit USTravel.org.
