Governor Laura Kelly may have a new lieutenant governor next week.

The governor has a news conference planned for 3 pm Monday after she appointed current lieutenant governor Lynn Rogers as the State Treasurer. Kelly listed Rogers' over 40 years of experience as a banker as part of his qualifications for the post.

Rogers will be sworn in Jan. 2 and will oversee revenue and finances. He will also direct the investment of state assets and make sure government can "operate safely and efficiently" through proper cash management.

Rogers replaces Jake La Turner, a Republican, who won the US House Second Congressional District seat last month. LaTurner said he is looking forward to a smooth transition, but former governor Jeff Colyer, a Republican, said Kelly's pick "ignores the will of the overwhelming majority of Kansans."

Governor Kelly has not specified the qualities she is looking for in a new lieutenant governor.
