Nearly a month after the state applied for the federal Lost Wages Assistance Program, the Department of Labor says it will begin processing payments before the week is out.

The Labor Department will start the processing work Friday. It will also start accepting self-certification.

This involves a $300 weekly benefit for claimants who can self-certify unemployment or partial unemployment due to COVID-19-related disruptions. If claimants remain eligible, funding will continue as long as the federal program lasts.

Originally, the weekly payment was $600, but that ended in late July. President Donald Trump then issued an executive order to provide $400 per week to affected residents if states covered $100 of that amount and built new computer systems to handle the program. Governor Laura Kelly requested the $400 option, but the State Finance Council decided against that so the governor then applied for the $300 option for affected residents.

This money will be in addition to regular unemployment benefits.
