Discussions on reopening plans for USD 253 Emporia Public Schools continued during a special Board of Education meeting Wednesday evening.

Board members reviewed a number of documents including the district's official operational reopening plan. The document, presented by USD 253 Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Kelly Bolin, contained information on proper hygiene, proper procedures in the event a positive case develops inside a district building, and mask usage among other points.

Mask usage will be mandatory inside all district buildings and buses according to Bolin. She says the district will also provide students and staff with two or three cloth masks that can be rewashed and used on a regular basis.

Bolin also reminded the district the plan is an everchanging document just as the COVID-19 pandemic is an ever-changing virus. The district voted unanimously to adopt the operations plan into district handbooks for the coming school year.

The district's reopening plan is available in its entirety on the district's website USD253.org.

In other business, the board took action regarding extracurricular activities approving a motion to follow Kansas State High School Athletics Association guidelines. The board also approved a new policy allowing students who opt for the remote only education model to participate in extracurricular activities so long as the activity can be offered remotely.

A point was made this would ultimately exclude remote only students from participating in athletic competition. Superintendent Kevin Case stated it is his belief that if parents choose not to have their children attend in-person classes it is likely they will not want them participating in in-person activities as well.

Case says it is important for families to keep in mind that this policy, like all other plans, can and will be fluid and adjustable.

According to the policy, families will have the ability to appeal this decision if they so choose.

The board also approved an amended calendar for the upcoming school year only. The calendar adjustments are also available for viewing on the district's website.

According to an additional reopening update, as of 2 pm Wednesday the district currently has over 3,500 students enrolled for the upcoming year. The USD 253 Board of Education will reconvene for its regular meeting next Wednesday via Zoom and at the Marry Herbert Education Center at 7 pm.
