Dialogue is at an all-time high for USD 243 Lebo Waverly as the start of school is now less than a month away.

During KVOE's Newsmaker Two segment Thursday morning, Superintendent Cory Reece announced the district has selected Aug. 27 as the official start for students with staff scheduled to report beginning Aug. 7.

Reece says the district will have both an online and in-person option for students to attend, much like other area districts. According to recent survey data, Reece says the district is anticipating around 60 students plan to utilize the online education option.

Reece says about a third of district families are considering an in-person return to class according to recent surveys, however, many patrons are waiting to see a formal reopening plan developed before making a final decision. Reece says the district is in the process of developing a plan for presentation to the Board of Education during its next regular meeting on Aug. 10.

Reece says masks will be mandated inside school buildings once the school year begins. He says the mandate has received mixed reviews from district patrons as of late.

Despite the debate, Reece says the school board is wanting to air on the side of caution meaning at this time mask usage will be mandated for "most students." Temperature checks, disinfectant equipment on district busses, adjustments to bus routes and limiting the number of students on busses will also be part of the district's mitigation strategies.

Thursday's interview concluded a week-long series of updates on area school districts including USD 251 North Lyon County, USD 252 Southern Lyon County and USD 417 Morris County.  If you missed any of those updates you can find them online in the KVOE.com Audio Vault.
