Three Emporia schools are approved for education redesign efforts.

Emporia Middle School, Village Elementary and Walnut Elementary were approved for the Apollo II redesign phase by the Kansas State Department of Education on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, USD 456 Marais des Cygnes Valley had its elementary, middle school and high school approved as well.

Apollo II is essentially Phase 5 of state redesign efforts under the Kansans Can initiative, following Mercury 7, Gemini I and II and Apollo. The overall plan aspires to have Kansas lead the world in the success of each student, using tracking metrics like social-emotional growth, kindergarten readiness, individual plans of study, high school graduation rates and postsecondary success to achieve that goal.

In a separate announcement, the State Department of Education honored USD 243 Lebo-Waverly and USD 386 Madison-Virgil as Kansans Can Star Award winners. The Star Recognition program honors districts for their achievements aligning with the main Kansans Can goals.
