Participants in Emporia's annual Polar Plunge flash froze on Saturday -- and did so for a great cause.

Air temperatures were in the upper 30s when the Plunge started and in the mid-30s when the Polar Strut began about 90 minutes before the Plunge. However, the water was quite a bit cooler.

Water temperatures were in the mid-20s, thanks to several below-normal days earlier in the week.

About 75 people participated in the Plunge and Strut, generating at least $5,000 with more money to come in later. That money will go to Kansas Special Olympics. Totals from the breakfast and lunch at the Emporia Senior Center are pending for local Special Olympians.

Kansas Special Olympics Regional Director Mitch Guthrie thanked people for supporting the cause, including those who have no direct connections to Special Olympics.

1 pm Saturday: Annual Polar Plunge benefits local, state Special Olympics efforts

Emporia's annual Polar Plunge descended on Mouse Lake on Saturday.

Around 75 participants generated about $5,000 through the Polar Plunge and Polar Strut. That money will go to Kansas Special Olympics. Totals from the breakfast and lunch at the Emporia Senior Center are pending for local Special Olympians.

As far as fundraising, Lindy Whetzel generated the most individually and The Mouse Team had the highest team total. For the costume contest, Emerson Ralston had the best individual costume and The Mouse Team had the best team outfits.

It wasn't the most polar of plunges this time as temperatures were in the mid-30s for the Strut and upper 40s when the Plunge started. However, water temperatures were in the mid-20s through the event.
