Just a day after Veteran's Day, Newman Regional Health hosted a special community presentation centered on veteran health care Tuesday evening.

American Legion Post #5 served as the venue for the informational occasion and welcomed representatives of the Veterans Administration Eastern Kansas Healthcare System and Congressman Roger Marshall. The majority of the evening's conversation focused on how veterans can access healthcare options under the new VA Mission Act which was signed into law back in June of this year.

The Mission Act replaces the former VA Choice Program and According to Military Affairs Representative for the Office of Congressman Marshall Tyler Mason, there are numerous benefits which accompany the still relatively new legislation. Mason believes one of the chief benefits is that the Mission Act simplifies the authorization process for veterans to receive medical services from providers outside of the VA.

Associate Chief Nurse for VA Community Care at the Eastern Kansas Healthcare System Marian Paulsen agrees with Mason and adds another vital component of the Mission Act was to combine multiple VA community care programs into one.

Tuesday's presentation comes on the heels of the closure of the VA medical clinic at 12th and Lawrence earlier this summer because of low usage numbers.
