Earthquake activity near Hutchinson jostles some area residents US Geological Survey map

Friday's earthquake activity in central Kansas was felt by several people in the KVOE listening area.

A magnitude 4.2 quake developed near South Hutchinson around 8 am. Weak shaking was reported in Emporia, Cottonwood Falls and Matfield Green, with moderate to strong shaking reported near the epicenter.

There have been several aftershocks, including a magnitude 2.7 that hit less than an hour after the first quake. Weak shaking was reported in Olpe after that quake.

Additional aftershocks have been in the 2.5 to 3.0 range. There have been no reported responses to those quakes across our area.
