The Lyon County League basketball tournament resumes Thursday at Emporias White Auditorium with the consolation semi-finals.
The Emporia State softball team will begin the season ranked 18th in the nation. The Coaches preseason poll has West Texas A&M, the defending national champions, ranked #1. The Lady Hornets advanced to the regional championship game last season and and finished the season ranked 20th. They are the only MIAA team in the top 25. They open their season on February 13th in the Arkansas Monticello tournament.
The Kansas City Royals Caravan made stop in Emporia Wednesday. Pitcher Brandon Finnegan and outfield Lane Adams along with Royals hall of famer Jeff Montgomery and broadcaster Joel Goldberg were in town for the stop.
The Emporia High boys swim team added the 200 free and 400 free relays to the list of events qualified for state at the Topeka High Invitational Tuesday.
It's a top 10 match up Wednesday night when the #2 ranked Emporia State Lady Hornets host the #6 ranked Fort Hays State Tigers.
The Opening round of the Lyon County League tournament is complete. Tuesday both number 1 seeds were winners.
The Kansas City Royals avoided arbitration with outfielder Jarrod Dyson Tuesday by agreeing to terms on a one-year contract. The deal is worth $1.225 million, according to the Kansas City Star. Dyson asked for $1.6 million while the team countered with $900,000.
Two members of the Emporia State track and field team have been named MIAA track athletes of the week. For the second week in a row Andrew Etheridge is the mens track athlete of the week. He won the 60 meter hurdles and placed 5th in the 200 meter run at the UCM Invitational last week. Carmen King is the womens track athlete of the week. She had the fastest time in both the 60 and 200 meter dashes. She also placed 2nd in the long jump.
