Washburn Rural shutout the Emporia High football team 21-0 in the season opener for both teams. Rural scored early in the first quarter and held onto the 7-0 lead going to halftime. Rural would add a touchdown in the 3rd quarter and added a 3 score in the 4th quarter to put the game out of reach for Emporia High. The Spartans will host Junction City next Friday.
The Emporia State Volleyball team opened their season with a 3 set win over Black Hills State in the Washburn Invitational Friday.
The Lady Hornets won 25-14, 25-23, 25-13. Emma Benton led Emporia State with 9 kills and 17 digs.
Drury defeated the Lady Hornets in 4 sets. Drury won the first two sets 25-18, 27-25. Emporia State won the 3rd set 26-24. Drury won the 4th set 25-22.
The Emporia State soccer opened their season with a 3-1 win over Harding in St. Joe, Missouri as part of the MIAA/GAC Challenge Friday. Amelie Heun scored 2 goals and Jacki Martinek scored 1 goal. Goalie Yadira Rivera had 6 saves. The Lady Hornets will face East Central Oklahoma on Sunday.
The High School Football season begins Friday night. Emporia High hosts Washburn Rural. Both teams are looking for bounce back seasons after finishing below 500 last year.
(ESPN) Lorenzo Cain hit a three-run homer, Paulo Orlando added a two-run shot and Kendrys Morales drove in four runs as the Kansas City Royals out scored Detroit 15-7 Thursday night.
The Kansas City Chiefs out scored the St. Louis Rams 24-17 Thursday night and finished preseason 4-0. Spencer Ware scored a rushing touchdown. Quarterback Chase Daniel threw a touchdown pass to Chris Conley. And Aaron Murray threw a touchdown pass to Darrin Reaves. The Chiefs kick-off the season next Sunday at Houston.

The Emporia High girls tennis team finished in 5th place out of 7 teams in the Emporia Invitational Thursday. The doubles team of Chelsea Herrarte and Kathryn Kienholtz finished in 3rd place. Gally Perez and Melissa Benjamin finished in 13th place. In singles play Mazie Kolterman finished in 9th place after winning 3 of 4 matches played. Maddy Young finished in 15th place. Andover Central won the team title.
