For the first time since 2003, the Emporia State football team is in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
And just like 10 years ago, the Hornets are headed north for their first-round postseason experience.
The No. 16 Hornets will travel to Duluth, Minn., to take on the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs on Saturday. The Bulldogs ended the regular season 10-1 overall and in the Northern Sun Conference, tied for second with St. Cloud State behind 11-0 Minnesota State.
Emporia State, meanwhile, finished 9-1 overall and in the MIAA after defeating Washburn 34-23 on Saturday.
The Hornets last achieved the playoffs in 2003, losing a first-round game at Winona (Minn.) State. ESU had defeated Winona State in the Mineral Water Bowl in 2002.
This is the second straight year ESU has reached the postseason and just the fourth postseason trip for Emporia State since jumping from the NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1991. The Hornets defeated Midwestern State in the Kanza Bowl last year.
Game time Saturday is at 1pm. Pregame coverage will be at 12pm on Mix 104.9 FM and KVOE.com.
