Emporia High football loses district opener

Emporia Highs football team was unable to complete the come from behind rally and was out scored by Newton 49-42 in the first game of district play.

The two teams traded scores before Newton would take a 28-14 lead. The Spartans scored twice, on a Tanner Taylor run and a Nolan Kirmer run, before halftime to make it 28 all at the half. The game may have been decided early in the 3rd quarter. Twice Emporia High was unable to cover kick-offs and Newton would take advantage of the opportunity to build a 41-28 lead. Newton was leading 49-28 before the Spartans would begin to rally. Quarterback Tanner Taylor scored his 3rd rushing touchdown of the game and then would throw a touchdown pass to Cody Campbell, his second touchdown of the night. Emporia High would recover a Newton fumble with just over 4 minutes to play but could not capitalize. Emporia High falls to 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in district play. Newton is now 4-3 and 1-0 in district play. The Spartans play at Andover next Friday. In the other district 5 game Andover defeated Valley Center 42-17.
