Sioux Falls out scored the Emporia State mens basketball team 94-89 in overtime Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
Sioux Falls led by 8 in the first half before Emporia State hit 7 of 9 3 point shots to take a 42-38 lead at halftime. The Hornets stretched the lead to 9 points before Sioux Falls would rally to to take a 5 point led with 46 seconds to play. A 3 point basket by Hassan Thomas with 11 seconds to play in regulation would send the game into overtime. In the overtime Sioux Falls out scored Emporia state 15-10. Sioux Falls out scored Emporia State 52-28 in the paint and 21-5 on second chance shots while out rebounding the Hornets 41-22. Emporia State Coach Shaun Vandiver said that was the difference in the game.
Emporia State had 4 players score in doublefigures led by Hassan Thomas with 24 points and 6 rebounds. He was 5 for 5 from the 3-point stripe. As a team Emporia State would make 15 3 point shots. Brian Morton added 19 points and was 3 for 3 beyond the arc. Brandon Hall added 18 points and 11 assists. Grant Shell finished with 13 points. Sioux Falls also had 4 players score in doublefigures led by Trevon Evans with 28 points. Jerrod Walton finished with 23. Teathloach Pal scored 14 and Drew Guebert finished with 13 points. The game featured 10 lead changes and 6 ties. Emporia State will play Southwest Minnesota State Saturday at 7:30p. The game will be broadcast on MIX 104.9.
