A mixed night for the Emporia High basketball teams in their season openers Friday night. The Lady Spartans held on for a 47-45 win over Lawrence. The Spartans were out scored by Maize 56-43.
Whitney Wilhite scored a team high 18 points to lead the Emporia High girls to their first win with Carolyn Lee as Head Coach. The Lady Spartans led by 10 points in the first half and by as many as 11 points in the second half. They would hold on down the stretch, getting a big steal by Taylor Birch.
In the boys game Maize would use a 7-0 run at the end of the 2nd quarter to break a 19-19 tie to take a lead they would not give up. Maize would use an 8-0 run to start the second half and would lead by 18 points in the second half. John Williams was the leading scorer for Emporia High finishing with 20 points.
The Emporia High girls and boys teams host Rose Hill Tuesday in the first round of the Garden Plain Tournament.
