SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

                                                  2-1-12

Bobbi and I love movies and have been utilizing the gift certificates to the local theater given to us by our coworkers at KVOE.

Monday evening we saw “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” starring Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock and young Thomas Horn.

To say this movie moved me would be a giant understatement. This movie is a “must see” if you have one ounce of compassion for the events of 9-11 – the Twin Towers attacks.

Let me share a paragraph from a summary provided by enotes.com.

Through the eyes of an incredibly precocious and extremely funny nine-year-old narrator, Jonathan Safran Foer tells a story of the effects of death on Oskar Schell and his family. Oskar's father was killed in the Twin Towers terrorist attack. Oskar's grandparents witnessed similar terrorists' attacks during World War II. The consequences of these horrid deaths have marked the psyches of the main characters in Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close in different, but equally painful ways.

Personally, seeing this movie again will likely allow me to understand even better the ironies, analogies, similarities, comparisons and gut wrenching heartbreaks that are present.

My imagination runs wild when I think of the number of families that experience similar reactions to terrorist attacks like 9-11.

You recognize Hanks and Bullock, but probably not young Thomas Horn who plays the son who lost not only his dad but his best friend. Not sure if he’s up for an Oscar, but he gets one from me.

“‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” is playing now at the Dickinson Theater in the Flint Hills Mall with show times of four and seven. It lasts 2 hours and 9 minutes. My advice would be to not take children until they understand what 9-11 was all about.

This movie has given me a new perspective on how precious life can be.

There’s something to think about and I’m Steve Sauder.
