HEVI-SHOT Information
Release from Vince J. Lange,
National Pro Staff for Hevi-Shot, non-toxic shot
shells.
The following are some of
Vince's thoughts concerning the use of non-toxic shot and dove hunting
applications.
The issue and usage of
non-toxic shot is here to stay. It's most prevalent on federal lands and extends to many
state areas. Any manufacturer of
non-toxic shot like Hevi-Shot
would be appropriate and the only thing to use in those settings.
Make sure your vest or bucket
doesn't contain any lead when not allowed.
This simple oversight can
lead to a lot of regulatory trouble if confronted by a field agent.
Like any regulated area for
hunting, it's the responsibility of the hunter to know the specific regulations
of the federal, state, local or native american
areas they hunt in. If you use a guide service they usually publish shot requirements on their
website or can answer questions by phone or email.
All of HeviShot
products are non-toxic so there are a lot of choices
for the shooter. I prefer to use Hevi-Shot Clay Target 12 ga, 2 ¾,
1 1/8 oz, 7 shot at speeds of 1175 pfs. Chokes should be patterned
and matched to the shot you use.
The most common chokes used for dove hunting depending on the shooting
distances are IC, M or IM.
Appropriate leads and a
proper shoulder mount are just as important as the shot and choke you use. Both should be practiced
before the season starts.
Shooting skeet is a great
exercise to hone these skills. The final
item is keeping your head down on the barrel while shooting. These things will greatly improve your
success when hunting doves in the field.
Heavy game loads of lead are
also popular and can be used when allowed. 7.5 & 8's in
various gage sizes are the most popular loads.
The chokes remain the same as indicated above along with the other
shooting tips.
Don't forget about safety also. Hearing protection, protective eyewear,
barrel position, hydration, gun open practices always make any hunt more
enjoyable and successful.
Good luck and share the
experience.
