1011th Reserve members enjoy reunion

Members of the 1011th Army Reserve spent time enjoying life and reflecting on war this weekend.

Reunion organizer Larry Scott says a lot of the soldiers were young and away from their family when they were told to fight in Vietnam.

"A lot of us were away from wives. I think half of us were married," Scott said. " I got my call to active on our first anniversary, so that made my wife real happy," he added with a chuckle.

"We were all young pups. We were in our mid- to upper 20s. Some of us were barely in the 20s," Scott said.

The 1011th was based out of Emporia and Independence when the unit was called to Vietnam in 1968. Now, Scott says, the unit is headed to Afghanistan for its second deployment.

Members of the Vietnam-era unit hold their reunion every two years, coming to Emporia every four years. They held two dinners, had a wreath-laying ceremony at the All Veterans Memorial and participated in a golf outing.
