It was a fond farewell for Emporia School Board member Colleen Mitchell, who was honored prior to Wednesday night’s meeting with a retirement reception.
A member of the board since 2015, Mitchell’s history in USD 253 actually goes much further back to 1975 when she came to Emporia State University. Teaching in the district for 33 years, Mitchell says she fell in love with Emporia and found her niche in education.
Mitchell says her proudest accomplishment on this board is finding and hiring Superintendent Kevin Case, noting that the district is in good shape.
Not only is Mitchell retiring from the district, she’s also retiring from her position as Zoo Education Coordinator at the David Traylor Zoo. She says she’ll still be somewhat involved in activities there in the future but says she’s looking forward to retirement.
The zoo is hosting a retirement reception for Mitchell on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Zoo’s education center.
