If you've traveled near 12th and Merchant within the last week you've probably noticed some changes to the landscape, west of the KwikShop convenience store.
A pair of vacant houses have already been demolished with another one set for demolition soon. In August, the Emporia City Commission approved two ordinances to expedite potential expansion including one which changed zoning from high density residential to general commercial district. New gas pumps are proposed for the site where the homes are being demolished.
At this point it's not clear if the convenience store will expand. But KwikShop real estate manager Russell Robben, in an email to KVOE stated "Company officials indicate that the demolition of the structures is the first step of a potential expansion that is still under consideration."
If the project ultimately gets approved, it's estimated it would include an investment just under $2 million.
