USD 253 Board of Education approves grants, discusses budget timeline

USD 253 Board of Education met Wednesday night, and had one of their shortest meetings this year.
During the meeting, the board approved two grants. Walnut PTO donated $1,188.77 for 5 keyboards and 20 headphones for the Walnut Elementary School music education program and $587.81 for teachers to purchase activity equipment and $200 for disc golf baskets and discs for PE and recess.

DuPont Pioneer Giving Program gave a $2,000 grant to EHS for their Crop and Range Management Class.

A tentative budget timeline was discussed. Assistant Superintendent of Business Rob Scheib explains how the budget timeline ultimately gets created.

Discussion of the budget is tentatively set for July 7. One of the mitigating factors in the budget timeline depends on Kansas legislation and K-12 funding. Scheib feels positive about House Bill 2410, which is up for vote on Thursday.

A second reading of the student handbooks was heard by the board. A welcome letter was added in the front of the handbooks from principals in each Emporia Public School. The handbook was passed.

Next board meeting is June 14.
