Unattended cooking leads to fire, injuries at 223 S. Congress

One person has been hospitalized after a fire developed in a south-central Emporia home.

Firefighters were called to 223 S. Congress shortly before 6 pm after a kitchen fire was reported. Acting Battalion Chief Steve Howe tells KVOE News firefighters found one person near the front door after a neighbor report somebody may be inside. Howe says the person collapsed outside the house but was conscious and alert when help arrived.

The victim was taken to Newman Regional Health for observation and treatment. His name has not currently been released.

As rescue workers were handling that situation, a fire crew worked inside the house and found fire in the kitchen. They put that out quickly and later learned the fire had not extended anywhere else in the house.

A cause and exact origination point have not been released. We'll keep you updated on KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media.
