Smart was abducted as a child in July of 2002 and held by her captors for nine months. During that time, Smart was controlled by her captors under the threat of death or the death of her family.

Law enforcement eventually located and rescued Smart in March of 2003. Since that time Smart has become a well known and celebrated advocate for child abduction recovery programs and national legislation

The Emporia State University Union Activities Council is presenting the virtual evening with Smart which begins at 7 pm.
