Outdoor burning will not be allowed for several counties in the KVOE listening area Thursday with extreme fire conditions in place, and a repeat is possible Friday.

Red flag warnings are up for Chase and Greenwood counties from 9 am to 6 pm, with a separate warning for Morris County effective from 11 am to 7 pm. The red flag warnings indicate extreme to critical fire danger.

In addition, wind alerts are in effect into Friday. Lyon, Coffey, Greenwood and Osage counties have a wind advisory now underway until 6 pm Friday. Chase and Morris counties have high wind warnings until 6 pm Friday. Wabaunsee County has a wind advisory until 7 pm Thursday, followed by a high wind warning from 7 pm Thursday to 6 pm Friday.

Winds will be steady out of the northwest from 20-40 mph, with gusts anywhere from 50-60 mph. Humidity levels will be 25 percent or below and grasses are dormant, meaning they will catch fire easily and will be tough to control if fires develop.

Downed tree limbs, power outages and travel difficulties for high-profile vehicles are also expected.
