CORONAVIRUS: Effectiveness of trial vaccines offer hope for turnaround in current situation, Millbern says Food and Drug Administration graphic

Several pharmaceutical companies are either asking for emergency use authorization with their coronavirus vaccines under development or are nearing that step. Lyon County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Jennifer Millbern says this is a big step in the right direction.

Pfizer and BioNTech have asked for emergency use authorization for their vaccine, which they say is 95 percent effective and could roll out within hours of approval from the Food and Drug Administration. Moderna and Astra-Zeneca are also noting 90- to 95-percent effectiveness with their vaccine trials.

When it comes to testing, Millbern says tests are available in a wide range of places, but some of the details like testing platforms or turnaround times may be different at each location. Testing numbers continue to increase from around 20 per day a month ago to better than 70 so far this week just at Flint Hills Community Health Center -- an increase similar to what's happening at Newman Regional Health.
