Every Lyon County teacher and staffer will get a $50 gift certificate through the Hopkins Foundation.

The announcement was made on KVOE's Newsmaker 2 segment Monday to kick off American Education Week. Foundation Vice President Michelle Hopkins-Molinaro discussed the rationale for the nearly $67,000 gift.

Board member Tom Krueger says this aligns well with the goals of E.L. and Z. Irene Hopkins to help educators.

USD 252 Southern Lyon County Superintendent Mike Argabright agreed.

The gift certificates through the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and Emporia Main Street are designed to be used at Lyon County businesses, thus giving them a boost as the pandemic picks up speed. USD 253 Emporia Superintendent Kevin Case says the structure of the gift program bolsters both individuals and communities alike.

USD 251 North Lyon County Superintendent Bob Blair was grateful for the gesture and what it signifies.

This will benefit close to 1,400 staffers in Emporia, North Lyon County, Southern Lyon County, Emporia Christian School and Sacred Heart.

In years past, the Hopkins Foundation has funded the Star Performer and WOW! Awards, which provided cash awards to teachers and support staffers. Over the past two years, the foundation shifted to provide grant funding for different projects organized by staff across the county.

American Education Week continues Tuesday as USD 253 Emporia Public Schools has its annual cookie delivery. Building representatives will call KVOE for short interviews between 9 am and 12:30 pm.
