New coronavirus cases rose by double digits to close the week in Lyon County.

Public Health announced 11 new cases and 10 recovered patients, moving the active case number to 72. Meanwhile, confirmed coronavirus deaths remain at 37 and the number of deaths awaiting final cause from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment is still four.

Colleges and universities is still the only active cluster category and there is still only one listed cluster, but the total is climbing slowly. There are now 70 total cases since mid-August with nine active cases.

For education in Lyon County:

*Emporia State University added eight cases over the past week. ESU is now reporting 73 cases overall and eight active cases. Two students are in on-campus isolation. Another five students are in on-campus quarantine.
*Flint Hills Technical College has one current case and two people in quarantine. The college does not announce its cumulative total.
*USD 253 Emporia had one new case in staff -- district support -- and one in an elementary student. The district says the student was not recently at school and made no mention of quarantine or isolation on its dashboard. Four staffers are now in quarantine. Earlier this week, members of the Emporia High varsity soccer were told they played against a player from another district that exposed them to COVID-19, but none of the EHS players were considered close contacts and games are continuing on as scheduled as a result.
*USD 251 North Lyon County announced four new cases in staff, three at Northern Heights and one in district support, on Oct. 14. Two staffers and five students are now in quarantine.
*USD 252 Southern Lyon County announced one positive staffer Oct. 9. Five staff and 36 students are now quarantined.

Areawide:

*Greenwood County added three cases and now has 71 total since March. Seventeen cases are active.
