Emporia Lions Club planning redbud tree giveaway at Farmers Market Lions Club logo

The Emporia Lions Club is going into its 100th anniversary next year with renewed emphasis on a longstanding project.

The Lions have been giving away redbud trees since 1939, and club members plan to be at the Emporia Farmers Market on Wednesday to give away 750 trees. Here's club spokesman Gary Post:

The first redbud tree giveaway dates all the way back to 1939. The Lions now have given out over 10,000 trees since the program began.

Post says residents can take away as many trees as they want -- with a caveat. The trees will be test-tube size, nowhere close to fully grown.

The Farmers Market will be from 5-6:30 pm at 7th and Market. If there are still trees available, club members will be at Saturday's Farmers Market from 8:30-10:30 am.
