As coronavirus continues to spread, local and area residents are doing what they can to help.

Earlier this week, Newman Regional Health asked residents to donate sewn masks for patients and sewn mask covers for hospital staff. Residents have been told to take their gear to Emporia Main Street. Director Casey Woods has been impressed by what he has seen, and not just with the finished products.

Newman Regional Health dropped off four new boxes of surgical drape, with a local veterinary clinic donating drape and certain businesses dropping off N95 masks as well.

Woods is encouraging people to add elastic or 100-percent flannel to their donations so more masks and mask covers can be made. Woods also says Emporia State student-athletes will deliver supplies and pick up finished products from residents who want to participate but don't want to leave their homes.

For more information about the masks and instructions on how to make them, go online to www.newmanrh.org/facemasks. To donate materials, call Main Street at 340-6430 and then stop by the office at 727 Commercial. You can also call Main Street to line up supply deliveries or product pick-ups.
