Former Kansas State Senator Jerry Karr has died.

Karr was 83 when he passed away Sunday. He served the 17th Senate District, including Emporia, from 1981 to 1999. He was also a retired farmer and stockman.

60th District Representative Mark Schreiber of Emporia says Karr's approach of working together for a common purpose was welcomed, both while he worked in the Senate and after he stepped away from the Legislature.

Current Lyon County Commissioner Dan Slater was the county controller for much of Karr's tenure. He tells KVOE News Karr was a statesman in every sense of the word.

Emporia City Manager Mark McAnarney says Karr was a "man of the people."

Current 17th District Senator Jeff Longbine says Karr was an individual who certainly left a mark during his time in the Senate.

Roberts-Blue-Barnett is in charge of arrangements, which may be finalized this week. We'll have more reactions to Karr's career and legacy on KVOE and KVOE.com.
