A little heat wouldn't stop community members and local college students from celebrating the start of a new school year Monday.

Even with heat index readings as high as 108 Monday evening, the annual back to school block party filled Commercial Street with hundreds in attendance. The annual party celebrates the return of both Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College Students for another exciting year.

Emporia Main Street Director Casey Woods says the party has continued to grow in size every year.

FHTC admissions representative Bryan Crouch tells KVOE News the events like the annual block party are a great help when it comes to recruitment for the college.

FHTC Dental Hygiene Student Katie Duran (Der-Ran) says for new students they have an opportunity to interact with classmates and create some "friendly faces" they can go to during the school year.

ESU President Allison Garrett agrees with that statement and says the block party also allows students to become acclimated and comfortable with their new surroundings.

Classes officially began for both ESU and FHTC Monday evening. Photos from the block party are online with this story at KVOE.com.
