Second moderate earthquake near Hutchinson felt in Emporia area US Geological Survey map

For the second time in three days, a moderate earthquake in the Hutchinson vicinity was felt across parts of the KVOE listening area.

A magnitude 4.1 quake was reported near South Hutchinson shortly before 4 am Sunday. Strong shaking was reported near the epicenter. Weak shaking was noted in Emporia, Cottonwood Falls and Matfield Green.

The earthquake -- and the resulting report area -- was strikingly similar to a 4.2 earthquake Friday morning. It led to strong shaking near the quake site and weak shaking in Emporia, Cottonwood Falls and Matfield Green.

Several aftershocks in the 2.5 to 3.0 magnitude range followed the initial quake before the early-Sunday earthquake. The only secondary quake to be felt near Emporia was the first aftershock, a magnitude 2.7 quake roughly 45 minutes after the first tremor Friday. Residents in Olpe noted weak shaking.

Word on damage and injuries is pending.
