Unemployment trends took different directions at the state and area level in the Kansas Department of Labor's latest monthly report.

Across Kansas, July's rate was 3.3 percent, down from 3.4 percent in June. Labor Department economist Tyler Tenbrink says two categories stood out.

Locally, however, unemployment figures went the other way. Emporia's jobless rate climbed from 3.7 percent in June to 4.2 percent in July. Lyon County's rate climbed from 3.6 to 4.2 percent.

Areawide, all counties had increases in their jobless rates. Chase County has the lowest at 2.9 percent. Coffey County has the highest at 5.8 percent.
