School starts this week in Emporia, and several activities are coming to get students ready for the school year.

Young students can head to the David Traylor Zoo at 10 am Wednesday for the annual Back to School Zoobilee, courtesy of the zoo, Emporia Public Library, Mobilizing Literacy 4 Lyon County Families and the Kansas Masonic Literacy Center at Emporia State University. Mobilizing Literacy Family Liaison Jodi Case was among KVOE's Newsmaker guests Tuesday:

Also among the activities: music, movement, a new nature area, cake walk, animal Olympics -- and book giveaways, according to Dennis Kear of the Kansas Masonic Literacy Center.

The USD 253 Food Service Department is making about 200 crispitos, while Hostess has donated Twinkies for the event.

Meanwhile, Emporia High's Student Council has its End of Summer Block Party from 5-8 pm Saturday. The event features games, food, drinks, information booths and a one-mile fun run starting at 5:30 pm. The participation fee for the run is $5 or a pair of non-perishable food items, with money and food going to the Spartan Stop.

Teachers got the year started Monday with the annual convocation.

Jump Start is Thursday for new students, either to the district as a whole or to different school buildings. The first official day of classes is Friday.
