Two separate local events will celebrate Arbor Day and its mission on Friday.

At 1 pm at the old Hornet Field, almost 60 student volunteers and university staff will plant trees on a trail that goes from 18th Avenue to the Neosho River in effort to improve the wildlife conservation in the area and celebrate the campus' sixth Tree Campus USA recognition.

Tree Campus USA is an Arbor Day Foundation program that honors colleges for showing excellent forest management as well as student and staff involvement in conservation. The program gave ESU their 2018 Tree Campus USA recognition earlier this year. ESU gained their 2018 recognition by meeting five standards set by the Tree Campus USA program including having and maintaining a tree advisory committee, dedicating annual funds for its campus tree program, having an Arbor Day celebration, and creating a student service-learning project.

Meanwhile, the annual tree planting by the mayor will be happening at 1:30 at Peter Pan Park near the Kiwanis shelter.
