A handful of county prosecutors from around Kansas spent part of their Wednesday in Emporia to chat with Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

The attorney general was in town to update prosecutors on recent developments in criminal law. Schmidt tells KVOE News the meeting was designed to make sure prosecutors have the latest information on evolving case law, and it's vitally important that prosecutors are on the same page in these matters.

Schmidt says these reviews have typically dealt with adjustments in homicide or child sex abuse decisions. Recently, the Attorney General's Office has added elder abuse as a major focal point because of the increase of senior citizens in Kansas and a related increase in crime against seniors. Because law is constantly evolving, Schmidt says his office constantly reviews decisions at the appellate court or Supreme Court levels.
