A strong mentality and deep-rooted faith can be a powerful tool in any trials you may face in life.

Emporia High School graduate and Topeka resident Krishawn Hunter has both of these attributes in spades despite what has been a very trying year. After Hunter and her husband, Wesley Hunter's daughter had to spend time in the neonatal intensive care unit following her birth, an explosion last June destroyed half the Hunters' home including their daughter's bedroom.

Unfortunately, the hurdles did not end there as Hunter was diagnosed in December with an aggressive form of brain cancer known as glioblastoma. To help support the Hunters, friends and family organized a special barbecue fundraiser Saturday at the Lee Beran Recreation Center aptly titled "Krishawn Strong."

The fundraiser menu included ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, potato salad and desserts all made and served by Hunter and her family. Hunter tells KVOE News her family has given her an abundance of positivity over the past year which has, in turn, prepared her to face all the obstacles in her path.

Hunter adds rather than focusing on the negativity in the present she has taken to focusing on the blessings to come in the future.

Hunter also took time to express her gratitude to the community for embracing her and her family and supporting them through their recent hardships. Totals from the fundraiser will be announced at a later time.
