A significant meeting is coming next month for the USD 253 Emporia Board of Education.

HTK Architects will present data at 6 pm Feb. 13 as the district prepares for work to its facilities. On KVOE's Newsmaker segment Thursday, Superintendent Kevin Case said this is the latest step as the district determines how best to make facility upgrades and thus enhance education. He also says there is literally a lot of ground to cover as the discussion continues.

HTK Architects was charged with studying facility needs, as well as analyzing systems, identifying life-cycle costs, determining the appropriateness of existing education space and gathering stakeholder input. Case says safety and security measures were the top priority for stakeholders during a series of meetings last year.

There are other priorities to consider as the process moves ahead.

Case says there are definitely space challenges and the newest two buildings are nearly 20 years old. In addition, recent partnerships with CrossWinds Counseling and Wellness and Communities in Schools also require space to fulfill their respective missions.

Case says the district has to determine the scope of the projects to come, and it also has to determine exactly how to fund them -- either through the current capital outlay program, a bond issue or a combination of both.

For more information, all the district at 341-2200 or go online to www.usd253.org.
