Squirrel teeth knock out phone service to Emporia offices

Non-emergency phone service for Emporia city offices was down for about down 20 minutes Monday.

Facilities Manager Ed Rathke says a squirrel chewed through fiber optics, causing the outage. Valu-Net completed its repairs in under 90 minutes.

The Emporia-Lyon County phone system has had intermittent issues the last few months, and Rathke says this situation is different from the last two outages because programming glitches caused those service issues. Rathke says all systems are vulnerable to nature. The goal now is to create enough redundancies in the system.
