Animal Shelter organizers hoping adoptions will pick up

The Emporia Animal Shelter is nearing one month since it resumed normal operations after a distemper outbreak led to the deaths of over 60 dogs this year. According to Police Lt. Jim Tilton, so far, so good.

Dogs at the shelter started getting sick in late February and early March after several strays from north Lyon County were brought in. Sickness hit the shelter in several rounds despite waves of bleaching treatments to eradicate the problem.

Tilton says adoptions have been slow for both dogs and cats, and he urged area residents to consider adopting a pet. For information on adoptions, call 340-6345.
