Soden's Grove improvements in rain delay

Rain has put a couple of dampers on renovations to the Soden's Grove baseball field.

Recreation Commission Director Tom McEvoy says rain Tuesday and heavy rain early last week put that project about 10 days behind schedule.

Soden's Grove is getting a new turf infield and sod outfield, along with a new drainage system. The bullpens have also been moved off the field. McEvoy says improvements were needed, so fall was the best time to complete the work before the baseball season next spring.

Drainage improvements, meanwhile, are virtually completed at Santa Fe Park as the Rec Commission makes those fields ready as practice facilities.

As that work continues, McEvoy is pleased with the reception to Emporia hosting the 3A volleyball tournament last week.

Emporia has hosted the 2A tourney in years past. This year, White Auditorium hosted both the 2A and 3A tournaments. Emporia also hosts the 1A Division 1 basketball tournament, 2-1A baseball and softball tournaments and the 5A football championship game. It's also hosting the 2014 Class 5A girls soccer tournament.
