Authorities: Murder suspect, victim were related

The Greenwood County Sheriff's Office and Kansas Bureau of Investigation are still working a case where one brother allegedly shot another to death in Eureka early Friday.

Greenwood County Detective Josh Nelson says 19-year-old Gabriel Mefford was arrested around 4 am after allegedly shooting 25-year-old Michael Mefford to death. The elder Mefford's body was found around 3:20 am at 718 North Oak.

Gabriel Mefford had his first court appearance Friday on single charges of first-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm. His preliminary hearing date has not been released.

Authorities are not saying what they believe led to the shooting.

This is the second fatal shooting incident not related to law enforcement in Eureka over the past month. On Oct. 2, Kevin Welsh allegedly shot to death the mother and stepfather of an ex-girlfriend, critically injuring the ex-girlfriend in the process. Welsh was shot dead by authorities Oct. 16.
