Eureka man shot dead, suspect arrested

Greenwood County deputies and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are investigating a fatal shooting in Eureka from early Friday morning.

Detective Josh Nelson says deputies and Greenwood County EMS were dispatched to 718 North Oak shortly before 3:20 am, finding 25-year-old Eureka resident Michael Mefford dead. Less than an hour later, a male suspect was arrested.

Sheriff Rusty Bitler says the investigation is in its early stages.

This is the second fatal shooting incident not related to law enforcement in Eureka over the past month. On Oct. 2, Kevin Welsh allegedly shot to death the mother and stepfather of an ex-girlfriend, critically injuring the ex-girlfriend in the process. Welsh was shot dead by authorities Oct. 16.
