Renovations discussed at Health Center-Health Department Board of Directors meeting

At the Flint Hills Community Health Center-Lyon County Health Department Board of Directors monthly meeting Tuesday, Oct. 22, rough plans for renovation were discussed.

Current plans call for a $2.9 million renovation of the basement to be used as a dental clinic. The basement is being vacated by Emporia Child Care, once they get moved into their new building on C of E Drive. Part of this money would go toward hiring 3 more dentists and one more dental hygienist, as well as building larger break rooms and conference room, and an employee exercise room.

Health Center-Health Department CEO Phillip Davis says these figures are estimates only, and depict the best-case scenario.

Dentists at the Health Center-Health Department are booked solid for 3-4 weeks, while the hygienists are booked for 6 months at a time. This is because it's the only health care provider in Emporia that accepts Medicaid.

In other news, the Health Center-Health Department has added a new full-time Human Resources employee, and 3 trained Navigators on staff, to help people with signing up for the Affordable Care Act. Davis says the Navigators stay very busy, but are available any time to answer your questions.
