Get ready for another weekend full of activities across the KVOE listening area.
The annual Sertoma Club scholarship breakfast is Saturday at the Emporia Senior Center. The club raises between $12,000 and $14,000 each year with approximately half of that amount committed to the scholarship program.
Scholarship recipient Kathryn Flott, a junior elementary education major at Emporia State and an Olpe native, was surprised to hear she had been awarded a scholarship. Flott noted how important the scholarship is to her.
The breakfast goes from 7 am to 11 am. Tickets are $4 in advance and $5 at the door.
The KVOE-Bruffs Steak Challenge is raising money for Emporia Child Care and its move to 1320 C of E Drive on Saturday. Child Care Director Deb Crowl is appreciative of the support.
Cost is $100 to participate, and there is prize money this year for the first time -- $300 for first place, $150 for second and $50 for third. Bob Binder and Joe Endres are offering to pay the entry fees for two teams, so call KVOE at 342-1400 if interested.
The Lyon County Showdown high school and junior high rodeo is happening at the Lyon County Fairgrounds both Saturday and Sunday. Organizer Gregg Gasche says a host of young riders are coming to Emporia from several states.
Rodeo participants will once again collect non-perishable food items for KVOE's Drive for Food, and area residents are encouraged to drop off their donations at the Anderson Building this weekend.
Neosho Rapids is having its first run of its annual haunted house Saturday night. Organizer Mary Lou Pearson says everything starts at the Neosho Rapids Community Building.
Activities run from 6 to 11 pm Saturday and again Oct. 25 and 26.
Meanwhile, Camp Alexander is into its second weekend of its haunted trail. Activities go from dark to 11 pm Friday and Saturday this weekend.
On Sunday, the featured event is the second annual Newman Regional Health 5-K Run Walk for Your Whole Life. Cost is $25. Foundation Director Jodi Heermann says the event is a natural tie-in to the hospital's mission.
Over 200 people have already signed up. The walk begins at 2 pm at 12th and Lincoln. For information, call Heermann at 341-7781 or go online to www.newmanrh.org.
