Welsh dead after shootout with KBI

Double murder suspect Kevin Welsh is dead.

The Kansas Attorney General's Office says the 35-year-old Toronto native, suspected in killing two people and badly injuring a third in a shooting outside Eureka two weeks ago, was involved in a shooting with KBI agents in Eureka on Wednesday evening.

Welsh allegedly killed 54-year-old Keith Kriesel and 52-year-old Sheila Kriesel during a domestic violence incident Oct. 2. Welsh is also suspected of shooting Sheila Kriesel's daughter, Catherine Scheff, who was also an ex-girlfriend of Welsh, during the incident.

Except for when Welsh allegedly dumped a getaway vehicle near the Woodson County line a few days after the shootings, officials have believed since the murders that Welsh was either in or near Eureka.

The hunt for Welsh had intensified recently, with a reward for information rapidly climbing from $5,000 to $11,000 and with Welsh landing a spot on the Kansas Most Wanted list.

Welsh, meanwhile, had other legal problems to contend with before the shooting. He had a preliminary hearing set for Oct. 29 on kidnapping, aggravated assault and domestic battery charges.

A media conference was tentatively scheduled for around 1 am Thursday but was scratched at the last minute. A media conference is planned for sometime Thursday, but there is currently no word on when or where that will take place.

10 pm: Authorities 'securing scene'

Authorities are "securing a scene" in Eureka after reports of shots being fired in the Greenwood County seat Wednesday evening.

Greenwood County officials say they are securing an area along Poplar Street but haven't given a specific address or block. They also are not currently saying whether the incident relates to Kevin Robert Welsh, the 35-year-old Toronto man sought the past two weeks in a double murder outside Eureka.

Residents of Eureka and much of Greenwood County have been on edge ever since the killing of 54-year-old Keith Kriesel and 52-year-old Sheila Kriesel during a domestic violence incident Oct. 2. Welsh is also suspected of shooting Sheila Kriesel's daughter, Catherine Scheff, who was also an ex-girlfriend of Welsh, during the incident.

Welsh was recently added to the Kansas Most Wanted list. The reward for information leading to his capture was also recently more than doubled to $11,000.
