Wichita duo arrested in connection with alleged marijuana grow operation near Eureka

Formal charges have been filed against two Wichita men for their alleged involvement in what Greenwood County authorities say was a significant marijuana grow operation.

Diego Ruiz Carmona, age 23, and Jamie Hernandez Perez, age 36, had their first appearances in Greenwood County District Court on Thursday. Both have been charged with unlawful cultivation or distribution of controlled substances. Bond has been set at $250,000 for each man.

Early Tuesday, authorities from several jurisdictions, including the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism and Greenwood County EMS made the arrests after finding what Sheriff Rusty Bitler says was a significant grow operation about nine miles due south of Eureka. Over 1,700 marijuana plants were seized, Bitler says.

The investigation is ongoing. Upcoming court dates will be released by Greenwood County District Court after Labor Day.
