Controversial vehicle registration fee ending

An unpopular vehicle registration fee implemented last summer is going away.

Lyon County Treasurer Sharon Gaede is opting out of a $2.50 facility fee on in-office transactions.

The fee did not apply on registrations mailed to the office. Gaede says it's unclear how much money was raised locally because all money left in the Motor Vehicle Office budget at the end of the year would be transferred to the county's general fund.

Gaede says a fee still exists for in-office title transactions.
