Amtrak open house Tuesday night

Folks interested in bringing passenger rail service back to Emporia are encouraged to attend a town hall meeting at 6 pm Tuesday evening.

Emporia's Amtrak Task Force members plan to share updates, answer questions and begin mobilizing for what First Congregational Pastor Andrew McHenry says will be the group's next steps. The meeting is at JavaCat.

The task force wants to bring passenger rail service back to Emporia after Amtrak ended service here over a decade ago. The Southwest Chief still goes through town on its way to terminals in Chicago and Los Angeles but doesn't stop. Decisions haven't been finalized yet among Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas for bringing the Northern Flyer from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to Kansas City, either through Newton or through Emporia and Strong City.

For information, call McHenry at 342-6854 or 785-220-9920.
