If you receive a check from the federal Women, Infants and Children program every month, your November check is on hold until the federal government shutdown is resolved.
The Flint Hills Community Health Center-Lyon County Health Department is not issuing checks for either November or December at this time. This comes after the Kansas Department of Health and Environment directed local WIC offices to issue only checks dated for October. KDHE can fund WIC purchases made with October checks but can't guarantee grocery purchases for the next two months.
Checks are valid for a month after a "do not use before this date" notice, meaning checks issued on Oct. 15 are good for WIC clients to use through Nov. 15.
Clients are tentatively being told to schedule an appointment next month to receive future checks, but if the shutdown continues, clients will be told they don't need to return.
An estimated 1,300 residents in Lyon, Chase and Coffey counties use WIC. For updates, check online at www.flinthillshealth.org., www.kansaswic.org or www.kdheks.gov. You can also call the local WIC office at 342-4864 ext. 3785 with questions.
